Research-backed validation of app features
Spaced Repetition (SM-2 Algorithm)
Research Findings: SM-2 is the most trusted and proven spaced repetition algorithm, used by Anki and Quizlet. Research shows optimal retention with intervals: 1 day → 6 days → exponential growth.
Current Implementation: ✓ Using SM-2 algorithm with quality ratings (1-5), ease factor (1.3-2.5), and proper interval calculations. Auto-progression on review completion.
Status: Fully aligned with research
Progressive Disclosure (New Card Introduction)
Research Findings: Optimal new card rate is 10-20 per day for language learning. Too many overwhelms, too few reduces engagement. Progressive disclosure maintains motivation.
Current Implementation: Adding 5 new cards when queue < 5. This is conservative.
Recommendation: Implement user-configurable daily new card limit (default 10-15)
Stroke Order & Handwriting
Research Findings: Studies show learning correct stroke order results in shorter response times and higher accuracy. However, stroke order may not significantly impact retention for all learners - handwriting practice itself is more important than strict order adherence.
Current Implementation: ✓ Stroke-by-stroke animation, ✓ Writing practice mode, ✓ Visual feedback, ✓ Free practice mode when stroke data unavailable
Status: Strong implementation. Consider adding: stroke accuracy scoring, muscle memory tracking
Tone Perception & Production
Research Findings: Effective tone training requires: (1) Perceptual training with auditory feedback, (2) Contrastive pairs, (3) Multiple speaker exposure, (4) Form-focused instruction with corrective feedback. Cantonese learners need specific training for Mandarin tones due to L1 interference.
Current Implementation: ✓ Audio playback, ✓ Visual tone diagrams, ✓ Accuracy tracking
Recommendation: Add minimal pairs practice, record-and-compare feature, corrective feedback
Contextualized Vocabulary Learning
Research Findings: Contextual clues significantly aid vocabulary comprehension and retention. Teaching words within narrative contexts (scaffolded approach) outperforms isolated word learning. Biblical context provides meaningful, memorable associations.
Current Implementation: ✓ Example sentences with audio, ✓ Bible verse integration, ✓ Cultural notes, ✓ Dialogue practice, ✓ Story adventures
Status: Excellent alignment with research
Active Recall & Multiple Modalities
Research Findings: Active recall (retrieval practice) is more effective than passive review. Multiple input modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) enhance retention. Production practice (writing, speaking) solidifies learning better than recognition alone.
Current Implementation: ✓ Recognition mode (visual recall), ✓ Writing mode (kinesthetic), ✓ Audio playback (auditory), ✓ Tone training (auditory + production), ✓ Self-assessment ratings
Status: Comprehensive multimodal approach
Gamification & Engagement
Research Findings: Streaks, XP, and progress visualization increase engagement and consistency. However, extrinsic motivation should not overshadow intrinsic learning goals. Immediate feedback and visible progress are key retention factors.
Current Implementation: ✓ Daily streaks, ✓ XP system, ✓ Badges/achievements, ✓ Progress tracking, ✓ Leaderboards, ✓ Immediate feedback on answers
Status: Good balance. Consider adding: daily goals, learning insights dashboard
